Since 1962, the Inglewood Public Library has served the community at its Main and branch libraries offering materials and services to meet the informational, recreational and educational needs of the residents of Inglewood.
The library carries nearly half a million items providing a world of information in both fact and fiction in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and other languages. Access to these materials is through the Library’s online catalog. The Library’s web page, www.inglewoodlibrary.org, displays the catalog and other library information and provides a wealth of resources. Except for reference collections used only within the libraries, most items can be checked out. Reference collections include general reference, business, law, occupations, consumer, tax, and African American reference sections, as well as a Spanish language reference section.
Along with 470,000 printed volumes, the library system holds more than 15,000 sound and video recordings available for circulation on disc or cassette. It receives over 1,000 magazines and newspapers annually, including business and investor’s services as well as many Federal, State and local government documents. Maps, travel information, vocational guidance materials and annual reports are incorporated in the information files. The Main Library has telephone directories from all over the U.S.A. and some other countries.
All libraries offer cardholders free public computer access to the Internet, e-mail, and word processing and other office applications. While staff cannot provide in-depth assistance, introductory computer classes in both English and Spanish are regularly scheduled. Also, look for free wireless “hot spot” access to the Internet for anyone bringing in his or her own laptop with a wireless adapter.
The Adult Services Division maintains excellent collections of print and electronic reference sources on a wide range of subjects. Encyclopedias, directories, almanacs, reports, test books, etc. fill the shelves. Electronic databases give additional access to magazines and newspapers, biographical information, business resources, and more. Visitors can perform their own research or ask professional reference staff for assistance. Telephone and online reference service offer help even when users are outside the building. Through Ask Now on the Library web page, reference help is available 24/7, even when the buildings are physically closed.
Children’s and Youth Services Division staff have the resources and skills to answer reference and homework questions and offer readers guidance. Groups can schedule library orientations and class visits. Story hours and other programs are offered throughout the year. Materials offered range from pre-school through teen level. Check the library web site for the schedule of events.
Audio-visual materials are available for checkout at all Inglewood libraries. The Main Library has on-site viewing and listening facilities as well. Included are music and spoken language CDs and cassettes, audio books, and popular movies and subject videos on DVD and cassette. The Main Library’s Language Learning Center provides on-site use of materials and equipment for studying English and Spanish.
The Hispanic Services Division offers books, magazines, audio and videocassettes, CDs, and audio books in Spanish on the same wide range of topics and interests covered by the general collection. It includes works of fact and fiction for adults and children. Division staff interprets requests for materials and service, and aids in locating Spanish and English language materials.
Other services in the Main Library include public-use typewriters, copy machines, study rooms, and a 199-seat lecture hall, available for community use. United States passport processing and Notary service is offered Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tax forms are offered during tax season. Business workshops are scheduled throughout the year. Some services, like lecture hall use and passport or notary service, may require a fee; others may require having a valid library card.
The Library is a part of the South State Cooperative Library System (SSCLS). SSCLS is an association of four public libraries that offers equal access to materials, inter-library loan and inter-library reference to its member libraries.
All California residents are eligible for a free Inglewood Library card. To get one, go to any Inglewood Public Library and fill out an application. Identification with current address is required.
